The city is proud to announce the proclamation designating February 2025 as Black History Month in Cedar Hill. The declaration was made by Mayor Stephen Mason, with an important message from Mayor Pro Tem Alan Sims, acknowledging that "Black History is American History."
The roots of Black History Month trace back to 1926 when Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, educator, and publisher, first introduced it as a week-long celebration. In 1976, it expanded to a full month, and now, the City of Cedar Hill embraces this time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans to our community, nation, and the world.
This year's theme, Celebrating African Americans and Economic Empowerment, highlights the many contributions made by African American entrepreneurs, educators, inventors, and creators. It underscores the power of education and innovation in empowering communities and advocating for freedom. From the work of Mary McLeod Bethune to the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, these individuals have been at the forefront of change and progress in our society.
As part of this year's observance, Cedar Hill recently invited the Cedar Hill High School Choir and Infinite Arts to showcase spoken word, music, and movement during the city’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. This event highlighted the continued need for innovation and creativity as tools for cultural and economic advancement.
In Cedar Hill, there is a strong commitment to honoring the diverse contributions of African Americans not just during Black History Month, but year-round. The city serves all citizens with respect, pride, and inclusion, regardless of race, religion, creed, or background.
Cedar Hill invites all residents to join us in observing Black History Month and to celebrate the rich history and culture that shape the community.
Proclamation Signed: Mayor Stephen Mason officially proclaimed February 1-28, 2025, as Black History Month in Cedar Hill, Texas, urging all citizens to take part.
