Requirements to Run for Office
Overivew
To run for Mayor or a seat on the City Council, an individual must be a resident of the City of Cedar Hill and be qualified to hold the office in accordance with state law.

A candidate must have been a resident of the state for twelve months and a resident of the City for six months preceding the date of the regular filing deadline for a place on the ballot, or for a write-in candidate, the date of the election.

Candidates by Place
Candidates for Mayor and City Council positions Place One and Place Four may reside in any precinct within the corporate city limits of the City of Cedar Hill.

Candidates for City Council positions Place Two and Place Three must reside in Cedar Hill Precinct Number One, which includes the portion of the City located west of Highway 67 in Dallas County.

Candidates for City Council positions Place Five and Place Six must reside in Cedar Hill Precinct Number Two, which includes the portion of the City located east of Highway 67 in Dallas County and all the area of the City located in Ellis County.

All positions are elected at large.

Applying
An application for a place on the ballot must be accompanied by a petition signed by at least 25 registered voters of the City of Cedar Hill.  The application and petition must be filed with the City Secretary. The filing dates for the May 8, 2010, City of Cedar Hill General Election are:

    February 8, 2010 - first day to file an application for a place on the ballot;
    March 8, 2010 (5:00 p.m.) - deadline to file an application.

A regular write-in candidate must file a declaration of write-in candidacy with the City Secretary. The deadline to file a declaration of write-in candidacy for the May 8, 2010, City of Cedar Hill General Election is 5:00 p.m. on March 15, 2010.
