What is FOG?
FOG or Fats, Oils, and Grease should never be put down the drain. Simple steps around the kitchen can help you avoid having a pain in the drain! When you put your cooking wastes down the drain it sticks to the insides of pipes and to other FOG causing blockages and backups which
can cost you time and money. Not only does FOG cling to the insides of the pipes under your home and yard; it can also accumulate in City sewer mains under streets, parks, and other properties. FOG can eventually block sewer mains (see picture below) to the point that sewage will back up and overflow from a manhole. Nearby property and streams can be polluted from an overflow killing aquatic life and requiring a costly clean up process.
Simple ways that you can help:
- Use environmentally safe cleaning products instead of harsh detergents of cleaners that can damage sewer lines.
- Put larger quantities of FOG (from turkey fryers, etc.) in a sturdy container and dispose of it at the City's Public Works Service center located at 1554 S. Clark between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Call 972.291.5100 x7250.
- Scrape leftover food scraps from dishes into trash cans and dispose of properly.
- Avoid using your garbage disposal.
- Cover kitchen sink drain with a catch basin and empty into trash can.
- Keep sewers Fat Free!
